What is it for?
Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in the population. Due to the functions of this mineral, it is key to sports performance, but it is especially in the sports population where the diagnosis of iron deficiency is even more frequent, especially in women and people who practice endurance sports.
The main problem with the dietary iron is its low availability and, in athletes, the effect of training on the hormone hepcidin, which regulates iron metabolism. Iron depletion occurs progressively and to prevent iron deficiency, adequate nutritional education should be carried out and the status of plasma levels should be checked.. When there is already a low level of iron or its stores, oral iron supplementation is usually the first therapeutic strategy. This treatment has the advantage of being cheap, non-invasive and generally has good efficacy.
Nevertheless, it is common for many people to experience unwanted side effects when taking iron supplements, especially gastrointestinal upset (pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation, diarrhea) and poor absorption. To this must be added many times the logistical challenge of taking into account all those factors that interfere with the absorption of this mineral (sports, other dietary elements, climate, etc.).
For all these reasons, it has been investigated new forms of oral iron supplementation to improve absorption and reduce irritation and other unwanted effects at the gastrointestinal level, thus improving the effectiveness of the therapy.
One of these novel formulations is the iron microencapsulation technique in a membrane called a liposome with a structure similar to the body's cell wall. Thus, liposomal iron is generated, which can be easily absorbed by fusing the liposome with the cells of the gastrointestinal mucosa and without being affected by the multitude of factors that reduce the bioavailability of this mineral.
For this reason, the absorption of liposomal iron is very good and gastrointestinal problems derived from its use are very infrequent, also eliminating the need to take the supplement on an empty stomach, at specific times of the day or accompanied by elements that improve its bioavailability. Thus, this type of formulation also makes it unnecessary to take iron together with vitamin C, nor does it have to be included in the supplement. Many other iron supplements also contain vitamin C, as it is a great promoter of iron absorption and improves its bioavailability. However, liposomal iron has the additional advantage of not requiring this help, being able to do without the presence of this vitamin or taking it together with foods rich in vitamin C.
In summary, LifePro Iron allows iron supplementation, guaranteeing a high absorption of the mineral, facilitating its intake and reducing the probability of suffering from gastrointestinal discomfort, which will translate into a better efficacy of the therapy and a better quality of life during its use.
